Focus on the interface – increasing speed and mobility
Are you ready for an incredibly powerful and fast web interface that can be used across desktops and tablets (including iPad and Android)? Now you have it! With SmarterMail 9.x, we have optimized the web interface for even the slowest of tablets while making it “XOOM” on desktops. We believe users deserve the full SmarterMail experience across all platforms, whether your using a mouse or a touch interface.

Outlook and SmarterMail!
SmarterMail 9.x is one of the only mail servers (including Microsoft Exchange) to support Exchange Web Services (EWS). EWS is Microsoft’s new technology allowing Microsoft Outlook to connect natively and seamlessly with a mail server. Currently, Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac supports EWS and the upcoming Microsoft Outlook 2012 for Windows will support it as well. EWS is intended to replace the old and antiquated MAPI technology, allowing for much faster communication and access to the latest technologies, and joins the existing methods already provided for connecting Microsoft Outlook and SmarterMail together!
More SYNC friendly
Ice Cream Sandwich, iOS 5, Mango, Lion and more! The industry is ever evolving and so is SmarterMail as it continues to focus on improvements in supporting the latest technologies. Whether you or a user wants to try a new mobile phone, tablet or OS you can be assured SmarterMail will meet your needs.

Email is good
but instant is GREAT!
No matter the size of an organization, the ability to communicate securely and instantly is crucial. SmarterMail 9.x integrates an Instant Messenger seamlessly without any additional configuration. Whether you’re logged into the Web Interface or would like to use a Jabber client on your desktop, tablet or mobile device, communicating with other users in your organization is great!
Simpler, smoother
installation and setup
Although SmarterMail is one of the easiest and more lightweight mail servers on the market, we have not stopped improving the process to get new servers installed and setup! SmarterMail 9.x introduces an updated getting started wizard with multiple walkthrough videos to help simplify the process.
Is that it?
SmarterMail 9.x has many more features and improvements. Below is a quick overview of some that may be of interest:
- Outgoing Mail Quarantine – messages flagged as spam or as a virus can now be quarantined for review to better understand why they were blocked and who was blocked.
- Appointment Conflict Notification – when making appointments from Web mail, SmarterMail automatically notifies you of conflicts between your attendees.
- Administrative logging – all system and domain setting changes are now logged for auditing purposes.
- Sender Match to Authenticated Address – a heavily requested feature to require the authenticated email address also be the email address used as the sender’s “From” address.
- APS Integration – SmarterTools is now providing APS packages for Parallels’ control panels for more comprehensive integration
- Web Services – additional web services have been made available to further automate the provisioning and configuration of SmarterMail

Will version 9 have better support for Exchange ActiveSync? Such as more message flags (follow-up, replied, forwarded) and better handling of attachment forwarding.
Also, how about the ability to remove the client ip on outbound authenticated messages and the ability to add a header that shows the authenticated user that sent a message?
The additional flags for ActiveSync will probably make it into the release but attachments may not.
An Anonymous setting will be available by domain. Authenticated setting will not be added.
Great thanks for the info, Tim.
I really hope you can get the attachment forwarding working in this release. It is hard to tell my clients nothing I can do for them when their attachments are not forwarded correctly when using EAS on Android as well as making it hard to sell the add-on to my clients. After all, who wants to use something that will not allow them to forward attachments in an email? It does work fine with Exchange 2010 so I am sure it is possible to make it work with SmarterMail.
I am looking forward to the new release.
Sterling,
I just forwarded an email with an attachment on both iOS and Android/Gingerbread using Active Sync and it works as expected.
Tim
Tim, if you check the email you forwarded via Android using EAS the attachment in Outlook should not show up. The attachment gets forwarded in the email but according to ST Support a header is missing causing some clients to not see the attachment. The ticket number is 301-15A0D4D2-553B and as you will see it is said to be a bug in Android however the same exact phone works fine when connected to Exchange.
In my test I was using SM 8 with EAS, HTC Inspire running Android 2.3.3 and Outlook 2003.
Thanks,
Sterling
Explain the outbound authenticated IP request?
We have an origination IP and that is going to be a setting in Mail 9.x to remove.
There is a receive line which is required by RFC but we do have an option to remove that already in Mail. 8.x
Removing the client ip from the received line is the request. A few smtp servers check all the message hops including the sending users ip. The current feature you have now to remove the entire received from line causes issues with the received date and time with some mail clients when the message is received. For example Outlook will show the date and time as the date and time in which the message was downloaded from the server rather than the date and time in which the message was sent. Adding the option to only remove the IP from the received from line would eliminate this issue.
Still no IP to location…
So sad…
Not sure what you mean?
We have MANY requests for customers who like to block / filter email based on the incoming country. For instance, we have a customer who receives a lot of spam from locations like Italy, Russia, Korea. And the ability for smartermail to lookup the connecting servers IP address and get a geographical location is a great thing.
We also have customers who like to filter email based on location for sales and support.
More screenshots please, Can,t waIT FOR THE realease.
Hello ! I’m anxious to test new Smartermail, are there any improvements in Anti-Spam system beyond Outgoing Mail Quarantine?
No additional enchantment have been made. The internal spam features achieve 97% protection and adding commtouch ups it to 99%. SmarterMail is very proficient in this area right now.
It also needs mobile webmail capability. The current webmail is unusable on iPhone and iPad.
Ben, the interface was completely re-worked so that webmail is fully touch capable. Just like we updated SmarterTrack for mobility, we did the same with both SmarterStats and SmarterMail. Not only is it touchscreen-friendly, the interface is much faster than earlier versions. I think you’ll be pleased with the results.
Is is a limited mobile-optimized experience, or a full version? My preference would be to have a limited experienced, with the option of the full system if I have time or absolutely need to see my calendar or something. I primarily need to check email and reply — and fast!
Yes – ever since 8.2….I can only read emails and not respond. Also – since they added the extra margin on the left…this cuts off the message and can not be read. I can not find anyone to help me resolve the issue
Are any of these features in 9?
Filter based on My address NOT in to or cc field
From Address in Address book
From Address NOT in Address book
Ability to highlight message line in different colors based on from address (like godaddy mail)
ActiveSync Module: Ability to set sync interval and make sure it doesn’t pop up in front of everything when it is syncing
Would be nice to know where the community forum is to sign up?
Bill,
As the BETA isn’t going to be available until next week, you can either check back here as I’ll link to the forum post from this blog, or you can check in at http://forums.smartertools.com for the beta announcement. Either way we can get you involved.
Next week?? Darn, last time I checked this post said it would be the 27th.
I’d love to see a feature such as ‘Create Task’ called ‘Create Calendar Event’ that would be most useful to create a Calendar entry from an Inbox e-mail. Holding thumbs, and thanks for a super product!
No add-on functions for security like force user password change and user password validity period ?
One other nice thing would be ability to use multiple calendars via CalDav, We’ve been using Google Calendar with Thunderbird because we need multiple ones. I tried it with SM, but, it won’t work, because TB sees the same URL as tries to authenticate using same username/pw. With Google, their are different URL’s to differentiate between which calendar you want, so we can have the additional ones show up.
Will SM9 be getting away from all the crazy pop-up windows? Will we get nice little icons and text labels for most commands like SM6 has? That left button bar REALLY needs small text labels as well, icons by themselves are always problematic unless it’s an unbelievable universal icon like ared X for delete…. there are few other icons self-explanatory enough to do without a text label. At least give us the choice please!
Really “chat with email integration and enhanced the quality is very good – and that certainly used to be good”, are used.
I’m waiting to test your application
Can you add in the feature to have conversation grouping? Example – when there’s too many flow of messages reply, I would need to search using subject as for it to shows up for the past and latest history conversation and it’s kinda troublesome for this. This will be something like a forum-thread reply where all the same conversation are sorted in once nice window.
I believe with the new indexing introduced since v7, this can be achieved easily? This feature will definately help businesses users especially C-level management to sort out their conversation easily in the webmail interface.
That would be a very cool and useful feature to have!! +1
