Game On: Level Progression in the Real World

Level 1 – Choosing a major

My path to SmarterTools was one full of choices. I started college studying psychology and then engineering but found myself constantly taking electives in computer programming. Eventually it dawned on me to follow my passion and major in programming. I did this by studying programming for simulations and games. I enjoyed the challenge in solving the complex problems associated with creating these types of software and I wanted to work in a comfortable and productive environment with like-minded people. Besides, I enjoyed my earlier studies in psychology and engineering and creating games was a way to combine all of my main interests into one area.

Level 2 – The job search

While searching far and wide for the perfect job after I received my degree, I was informed of a position for a software developer here at SmarterTools from a good friend and colleague of mine, Chase Thomas, whom had recently been hired here. I was still mostly interested in simulation and game programming, but I was compelled by my friend’s high recommendations of the company and its employees. I decided to check it out, applied, talked on the phone with their terrific HR manager and set up an interview. During the interview I had the privilege of meeting the owners of the company and was impressed by their dedication to both employee and customer satisfaction. They have managed to create a work environment that is not only highly productive, but very comfortable as well; just the kind of environment I envisioned were I to program computer games. Additionally, the employees working here are all talented and friendly individuals who get along and work together with ease.

You’re Hired: Recent SmarterTools hire talks about first months on the job

It’s never easy biting the bullet and making a decision to look for a new job. However, there is a positive side: while it’s difficult to make the decision, it’s best to be able to take the dive into a new job on your own terms versus being forced to do it. Lucky for me, I was in the former category when I decided it was time to move on.

So, I tidied up my resume and set about the arduous task known as “the job search.” I was searching for a job within my field that utilized my skills and allowed me to continue to grow. I knew the job market was tough now, so I hadn’t set my expectations too high.

However, when I interviewed with SmarterTools I found more than just another job opportunity. I found a company with a strong market base and a sound set of functional and effective business applications. During my first month working here I found that not only was the job fulfilling but the company and its products also offer new information and growth opportunities that I didn’t have before.
